I'm divided. I agree that they can reduce the professional appearance of a post. On the other hand, sometimes there's seems no way to post what needs to be said without "sounding" unprofessionally rude or flippant; in those cases, emoticons can soften the tone of a post, and more clearly reveal the attitude of the poster, without having to spell it out--both saving time and (ironically) increasing the professional tone of the board. So the problem/question is: Do we have the wisdom to know when to use them, and when to refrain?

Smilies are overused and evolve into animated smilies, etc. I don't think they belong on a professional board where most people look for business information.

You're right about the business to tend to----that is very important. BUT sometimes

Good point! It's obvious that if there had been a "second shooter" behind the "grassy knoll," then, given the requisite angle and trajectory of the bullet in conjunction with the limited distance to the automobile, it could not have attained sufficient velocity to propel the president's head backward upon impact as opposed to the forward-slump which subsequent photoanalysis reveals actually occurred.

Personally, I suspect the 50-50 smilie stalemate to be the devious doings of that conniving Californian, the venal jainen (dang know-it-all sourpuss).

I voted for smilies yesterday or was it the day before..........? Anyway this board can be professional and still be fun. We are smart, intelligent people, a unique group but we can still have a playful or happy side too.

Smilies will just break the tension and overload we all feel from time to time. We all need to laugh. It's good for the soul.
