    Non Profit Group

I have a Non Profit Christian Motorcycle group that needs to catch up on filing returns. Looking back, the only thing we can find is the EIN application saying they need to file Form 1120. Nobody in the group seems to know anything about the previous filings of the group.

Does anyone have any guidance on what type of organization would best suit this type of group. They have rides and raise money for needy people from time to time.

    Thanks

Apparently, from your post - the group doesn't appear to be a 501(c)(3) type.
It sounds more like a private club - even though it raises funds to benefit the
    community.
    I suggest that you complete a Form 1024 - that's the application form that's
completed to apply for an exempt organization that's NOT 501(c)(3).
Your group sounds like a 501(c)(4).
The organization is NOT tax exempt until IRS grants you the exemption upon
an application (and the application fee - Form 8918.
And in recent years, if an organization, once approved as tax exempt, hasn't
filed for 3 consecutive years any form of a 990 - the tax exemption is revoked.

Once you get the IRS exemption, I suggest that you also find out about the
related required state filings with the Attorney General's Office of that state
and also the possibility of getting a state tax exemption for various other
purposes such as on purchases for sales tax.

On the IRS website irs.gov search for Form 1024 and instructions.
