Unmarried couple had child and now split. My client claimed the child as he lived with him most of the year. However, the girlfriend filed first and also claimed the child. My client's return was rejected and was advised to paper file. New at this. How long does it usually take to get this settled? Long wait?

It may take quite awhile.
Have the client gather the proof that the child lived with him. I would make two copies of the 'proof', mail one set with the tax return and keep another one for when the IRS asks for it.

Had one similar to this for a 2011 return. Resolved in fall of 2013. IRS audited a companion issue; American Opportunity Credit. Lots of paper work and headache. Client won.Comment
