Even clients I've known for years I still have them bring a report card in if possible and a bill from a doctor for children not in school. I don't do many EIC tax returns, 10 or less, but still feel the need to cover myself. Although after reading David's post I may follow his lead.
My clients ended up not claiming the grandchild and I told the daughter to go to another preparer. I am not taking any new EIC customers... unless they want to pay me $500 to cover the possible penalty.
