HP are real workhorses. I agree that Staples has a lot of brands and a lot of models on sale right now. Check out your nearest store or Staples.com. Also, look at hp.com.
My old HP Officejet Pro L7780 All-in-One is terrific. It's color, but also has two-sided printing, scanning, feeder AND flat bed, Bluetooth, fax, copier, two paper trays, and on and on.

The cost of the consumables is more important than the cost of the printer!
Before you buy any printer check the ink/toner costs as well.
Many times a great low cost printer will cost you more with the consumables.
Epson Workforce printers are doing me just fine. Double sided, decent speeds. No issues.
Keep saying I'll get a laser but have not been able to justify the cost difference.
Good luck.Matthew Jones

Brother printer and toners are inexpensive, especially the generic toners from injetsuperstore.comTaxes after all are the dues that we pay for the privileges of membership in an organized society. - FDR

I use an HP Laserjet 1320. Bought my first one at an auction, supposedly "brand new" but had run 1700+ pages. I buy compatible cartridges for about $20 apiece and have had very few issues. I get 3000+ pages per cartridge and this is way more economical than inkjets. When the first one starting having issues in the middle of last February, I went and bought a Brother laser printer locally, used it a couple weeks, was not impressed with the cost of cartridges and the low page yield, so I went looking for another 1320 as I had 3 new cartridges on hand. I found one at gtprinters.com. They have a good selection and will take your old printer in trade.Check them out.

Printer
I bought a HP1102w about 3 years ago for about $80 brand new at Staples. It just prints, no extras. I have a different printer that has the print, fax, scan, copy, etc. So far I have had no issues with it. I bought the toner cartridges from Amazon last year, pretty cheap. This year I got 2 toners for around $30Wtorres

If you refill your toner cartridges
For those of you who refill your toner cartridges, watch out for some of the newer printers that have a chip inside the cartridge that indicates the toner level. So if you refill without changing the chip your printer will still flash a low toner warning each time you go to print.
The older printer models had a flag gear mechanism that could be easily reset!Taxes after all are the dues that we pay for the privileges of membership in an organized society. - FDR

HP has always been a workhorse for us.
I have a HP4000 that is still going strong. I needed another printer and purchased the HP4014n. They may be over your budget, but well worth the extra money. I haven't had any problems with these laser printers. You can find reconditioned ones too. If cost is a main concern, then my suggestion if to go to your local cartridge refill place and ask them what they recommend. I did that for a home printer and they recommended a brother printer because the ink cartridges are a lot less expensive.
Now for office quality and high volume printing then definitely HP laser jet printer!

In my opinion the generic toners are just as good as the brand name toners for less than 50% of the price. Brother toners are generally much cheaper than HP and the quality for tax return printing purpose is adequate. After all we are not printing in color, just black and white!Taxes after all are the dues that we pay for the privileges of membership in an organized society. - FDR
