    HELP-Form 1098-T

    Clients daughter received a 1098-T for 2005. Boxes 1 - 2 & 3 are blank.
    Box 4-Scholarships, grants & awards $5101.
On the back side of the 1098T it reports as follows:
    Charges 8/22/05 General student fees $ 0.00
    8/22/05 Lab/Course Fee 0.00
    8/22/05 Technology Fee 0.00
    8/22/05 Tuition-Fall-Undergrad 0.00

    Payments: 1/10/05 Need Based Scholarship $ 525.00
1/10/05 TX Tuition Equalization Grant 1826.00
    1/10/05 Transfer Baylor Scholarship 2750.00

What do I do with this other than throw it in the wastebasket?
    Thanks

    Scholarship

Would it be taxable to student to the extent the full $5,101 was not used for tuition? If mom and dad used their dependent's tuition on their tax return, for the hope credit for instance, does the student have taxable income from the scholarships?

First I would try to get transcript from school to find out what they actually were charged. Looks like they reported only scholarships and how scholarships have been applied. Maybe they had to pay much more than the scholarship money.

To me it looks like this student might ahve been enrolled at one School and paid another. There might be a 1098 T from the other school which shows the tuition billed for.
Just a thought. there is something peculiar going on.

            Did the daughter

only go to college for one semester in 2005? If so, what usually happens is the Sping tuition is billed (and is usually due) in December (2004) but the scholarship and grant money doesn't become available until January (2005). So, if the parents paid the tuition when it was due it would have shown up on the 2004 statement and the credits on the 2005 statement.
