    Mandated fees for Education

My client paid late fees for enrolling late. These would be charged to any other student who enrolled late. Can we claim these as mandated fees or is that too mcuh of a stretch?

    Late Fees

Generally, you can't deduct fees for things you did wrong: traffic tickets, penalties, late fees, etc. So, I think you're stretching it.... What would the deduction have been if he did everything right? Might be exceptions for hurricane area college students who transferred to other colleges and incurred additional fees for late registration....

You can't deduct penalties for the violation of a law as a business deduction. That would not apply in this case.

You can use tuition and related fees required for enrollment. Sounds like late fees were required to me.

I would also agree that this is a "required for enrollment" fee.
