    18 yr old Custodial

This is borrowed from another thread - the statement was inferred that when a child turns age 18, custody becomes irrelevant, unless he is 18 for more than 6 months in which custody would be relevant for one final year.

After brow-beating the concept of custody = dependency now for the last several years, does anyone have suggestions how to explain loss of dependency when a child is a college student...

The subject has other tentacles as well - e.g. FAFSA attaching to a custodial parent, child claiming hisself, etc.

For a full time student at college under the age of 24, I would look at the support test if the child does not live with either parent at all.

Then tell my client who benefits the most claiming the child based on their relative incomes.
