I am glad I switched to Windows 7 all my computers in the last 2 years. I will wait to see how the dust settles on Win 8.1 before making a move. Win 8 is out for me. I skipped Vista as well.

Moving to Win 7 - I always stay behind on Microsoft and don't jump on the new and latest and greatest!

Still have an XP that for now is up and running - but this is going to give me some grief with some old programs, if my XP fails.

Don't junk your old XP computer. If you don't use to browse the internet you can still use it to run old software that runs best on XP.

I am going to keep my old XP computer until it dies! I still have a DOS computer.

Windows 7 works great. The problem is not all of your old XP software works on Windows 7. Most of my software worked, but a few programs I had to buy the latest version to get it to run properly. The XP option that comes with the professional version of Windows 7 is a joke. Don’t bother with it. You are better off just buying the latest version of your software and using it on Windows 7.

I plan on just adding a windows 7 computer/server to my network and keep my XP computer/server available for those special occasions (like old programs). This way I have the best of both worlds. My workstations (4) will remain with XP OS. I don't believe this will be a problem going forward.

This will all happen in the summer of 2014. For those that only work with one computer, maybe it is time to set up a LAN. This will give you the best of both worlds, XP and Win 7.

I have Windows 8. Once I added the Classic Shell program to get the old feel, it's never been a real problem. Honestly, can't even really tell the difference at this point. Some adjustments did need to be made but they were all relatively easy with a quick internet search of the problem.

Why anyone at Microsoft thought doing away with the Start Button option completely was a good idea is beyond comprehension. Mind bogglingly stupid IMO.

Maybe because you have to hit the START button to turn OFF the computer....

What experience have other posters here had with upgrading from XP to 7? Was it pretty seamless or do you have to reformat the drive and re-install all the software?

I believe you need Windows 7 based hardware, but I could be wrong.

I have always coordinatied by system upgrade (ex: XP to 7) with a new hardware purchase and that has worked well for me. I am going to do one more tax season on XP.
