    Double-Barrel Notices

It's time for us to start answering these CP2000 notices (and other notices) that our clients receive.

This year, I'm starting to see two identifical notices for clients who have filed MFJ. Husband and wife BOTH getting letters that read exactly the same.

What's going on? Is the IRS afraid one of the parties is going to leave town?

These double notices have been that way for a couple of years now.

I think it ties in with the POA's that must be sent in separately for each taxpayer on a MFJ return.

Probably has to do with spouses that split up and one conveniently forgets to inform the other spouse and doesn't follow-up on the notice.

Or spouses that don't split up and one wants to hide notices from the other.

But when both goes to the same address, whoever gets the mail first controls!

Yes, both the spouses on MFJ receive the notices and then when we sign on as POA, we as POA's also receive the double notices. Seems to be for all communication.

      So much for paper reduction

        Sop

From my experience, this is IRS SOP on MFJ returns.
