Before those 1099 questions appeared on 2011 returns ........

....... did you even broach the subject with your clients? All of them?

    It Depended

I never broached the subject about needing a 1099 for rent paid by my clients business.
I never broached the subject of psychotherapists needing to do 1099 when claiming their therapy as a training expense.
I always talked to contractors and manufacturer's about 1099's.

If the client does her/his own books they should know the law and be able to answer this question. If they have a bookkeeper or accountant that is the person the client should direct the question to. I have providedd my business clients with the law (in layman language) for both the W9 and 1099 to insure they are aware of consequences.
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.
