Yes, tack on a surcharge for paper returns.

      Preaching to the choir.

Charge the same price for electronic or paper. Better yet charge more for paper cuz it costs u more.
Yeah, I know you guys are all already sold on EF, but it's NOT a "no-brainer" to Jack. He hasn't done it before and I'm trying to advise him about easing into it. It's a big change if you're not used to it.

As far as saving time, I don't agree with that. It doesn't save me any time if a guy has 10 W-2s and I have to type both EINs, addresses, and all other info on each one into the computer. If I'm doing paper, I only have to type gross plus fed & state w/h (and 401-K amount, if any). And I still have to make a paper copy for the client. Too, I spend a lot more time dealing with EF clients (and IRS) about something wrong with their returns. Paper guys usually just bring a letter in after tax season and I have plenty of unrushed time to deal with it.

As far as the 2008-80% e-file congressional mandate; no I was not aware of that. But how do you know if you are one of those mandated? Who's the lucky 20%?

Sorry have to disagree. Been efiling for several years now and there is no question in saving time. Our software stores w2 information on employers and pension companies. We don't have many people who have multiple w2s but if they do we charge by the w2 anyhow so more's the better. We receive virtually no letters anymore. I have to admit it was more work initially in the first couple of years.

saving time as far as you are concerned, but I feel just the opposite--it doesn't save me any time. We do have lots of people with multiple W-2s and and we don't charge anything extra for more than one W-2. Also, as to "the more the better," I don't know why I should feel good about charging them more money. People here are broke enough as it is.

Minnesota requires paid preparers to e-file. I refused to do e-filing until I had no choice. Now I'm glad I e-file.

I'm thinking of going paperless next year. I'm tired of sneezing at the toner from my lazer printer.

that should be...ahem..."laser" printer. Lazer printers are for those tax preparers who, from the comfort of their La-Z-Boy recliners, prefer to activate their printers with a remote (not, of course, to insinuate that you're less than an energetic overachiever).

Thanks for the spelling lesson. I've always thought it was pronounced lazer printer.

I was trying to soften the blow as much as possible, but I just couldn't stand it (the old school; you see). Anyway, you're half-right. It is pronounced that way; it's just not spelled that way, which is why the error is so common.

Gosh; that's the first time I've ever been able to tell you something you didn't already know. I feel like I've broken new ground here and a celebration is in order.

Don't dance too much. I have always been the world's worst speller. I usually type my stuff in Word before pasting it to the message board so that I get everything spelled correct.

I guess I was just too lasy this time.
