    First Ever IV Letter

No, not an intravenous line, but we may be wishing for one by the time this is over.

First ever letter from the IRS "Integrity & Verification Operations Program Manager."

What on earth is this and are they our friends? (I doubt it...)

    Don't keep us in suspense!

    What does it say?

A client received a Letter from this Dept (I&VO) in late February 2013 for 2012, due to the amount of their Refund. Their refund was held up approximately 90 days., while IRS investigated their Income and withholding reported on the tax return. Income was all W-2 income and small amount of interest.

Taxpayer is being told that their refund is being held up subject to items of audit. But does not define the focus of the audit, just the usual verbiage about income, deductions, taxes, credits, etc. Asks them to just sit tight and wait on followup. Refund is very large, similar to what ST told us in her post.

IRS has always something similar, formerly called large case.... somethingornother.

Any refunds over a certain amount, maybe 100,000$ or so; maybe a million, were "pre audited" by field agents.

I've seen 2 in the last 2 months. Client brought notice in & we decided to call the number indicated on the notice with both of us present, (rather than have the client go online directed to the website within the notice). Mostly, I was curious about this program. It appears it is a new this year, attempting to verify client idenity due to all the fraud. Both of my clients were picked randomly, verified by the agent. Client was asked a couple of questions concerning his 2012 filing, such as filing status, expected amount of refund, source of investments (multiple choice) than some questions concernng his personal finances (seems like they were citing a credit report). Asked as a multiple choice:, lender of a car loan, $$ range of his car payment, and some other questions, such a prior address. After about 40 minutes of questions, the agent stated all was well and he believe client was the valid taxpayer and the 2012 return waould be processed as usual.

Yes, these notices certainly cause client anxiety!!! I had not heard that this program was about to launch.
