    Rhode Island

Does RI have a Form 8879-type for e-file signatures for non-resident returns? Or, does it accept the Federal 8879?

    Software

Not sure. However, when I do screwball states (any state other than the Great State of Michigan) I rely on my software to provide me with a signature form if necessary. I know that Tax Your Pants Off Illinois has a separate form as does Georgia. I do not have a client in RI though.
I would put a favorite quote in here, but it would get me banned from the board.

      Just for grins

I went in and created a fictitious client living in RI. There was no separate form for RI.

I just did one for a Maine resident and could not find one either. So I am assuming the fed is sufficient for all these non-8879/8453 states even though the fed form has no state information on it. So I guess just the efiling of the return itself is proof that the taxpayer okayed it. I can't imagine why it would be, but oh well. I guess VA is the only state that has TWO.

CT where I live and work accepts the Federal form and has none of their own. NY where I file lots of NR returns for my commuter clients has their own form, doesn't even use the same numbering convention as the Federal and many states for the NY signature forms. My software was not generating a form, and whatever book I grabbed TTB didn't say RI did nor that RI didn't. I'm transmitting now. Doubt RI will show up at my door to perform an e-file audit here in CT.
