I have a client that is a chapperone for a high school academic team. The team won state and then went to Atlanta for nationals. The chapperone was given $400 for registration and room. Is her mileage from Minneapolis to Atlanta deductible at $.14 per mile? She has records for all her expenses.
    Thank you.

Most non-profit educational institutions are qualified organizations for charitable purposes. Mileage @14 cents per mile, round trip.

      what if....

chaperone paid for her own room and meals? Would it impact anything if her own child were on the trip?

depends on whether she just went to watch her daughter (presonal) or whether she actually was a chaperone vollunteer. If she was she can take expense that exceeded the 400. she was given......as long as it wasn't extravagant.

Did she ride on the bus with the kids to chaperone them? Drive them in her car? Why was she traveling separately if a chaperone?

Wow, this made me think, what if someone went on a trip to DC as a chaperone, traveled by bus with the 6th grade class but paid for the trip? Is this deductable as charitable contribution?
