    MFJ (High medical expenses for one spouse)
    Net Tax: 31,596


    MFS
    Net tax: 14,950
    Net tax: 14,023

    MFS COMBINED
    Net tax: 28,973

    MFS SAVINGS: $2,623


    But, I guess these savings are just a figment of my imagination.

      I don't know mind you but .... In the above case does it matter who actually paid for the medical expense. Or can they assign the medical expenses paid by one spouse for the other to the one with the higher medical expenses. Just curious.

        I'm in a community property state, and my fee for preparing MFS will usually outweigh any savings. Unless there's a lot of separate property, it usually doesn't make sense unless one spouse has outstanding tax bills.
