    Form 2848 to sign form 1096

    I was told by the IRS that I cannot, as the bookkeeper, sign the form 1096 unless I have a signed form 2848 on file. By checking the box "signing the return" on line 5 of form 2848 give me authorization to sign form 1096? I am an EA and have a CAF & PTIN #.

      Or you can just e-file the 1099's and 1096's.
      I would put a favorite quote in here, but it would get me banned from the board.

        Experience is 1096/1099 have always been accepted, although it is possible that they would need a POA on file - I do as a matter of routine file in POA on Biz clients for access to accounts, and talk with IRS on notices.

        More paperwork!

          Signing any tax forms for a client requires a POA. I won't, as policy, sign any forms for clients.
          Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.
