Was informed that I have a client coming in Thursday that has a NY return so I had to go online and register with NY in order to be able to file their State return. How are NY returns? Pain in the butt or not.

I'm in CT with a bunch of NY commuter clients, so I prepare a bunch of NY NR returns. Not too bad if you have software that's good at multi-states. If your client is a NR and worked outside NY for his employer (travels to visit clients, or for training, etc.) then you can allocate days out of NY if his resident state tax rate is less. If your client was a NY resident, there are several NY preparers here. Look over the forms and come back with your questions before your client arrives. (I seldom prepare returns with the client sitting here, but never with multiple states.)

Thanks. I'll see what happens. I really don't know any details other than I was informed that I had a client scheduled for Thursday that would need a NY return and that I had to register with NY in order to be ready for him. Whether I really had to register or not I'm not sure but I did anyway.
Tommorrow I'm taking the day off and going to the casino to play poker and take my mind of this stuff for a day. It's amazing that sometimes I / We get a little screwed up in the head after preparing one return after another for several weeks in a row. It gets easy to make a mistake, if you're not careful and sit back and take a deep breath once in awhile.
