I have never used Turbo Tax nor do I ever intend to. On this Board and from some of my clients are references to Turbo Tax. I had a college student whose friend prepared his return with Turbo Tax. TT had a refund of $130 and I came up with a $1200 refund (because of Education credit). I had a client yesterday who had used TT and owed about $1300. He purcahsed a gift certificate that I had given to his church to be auctioned off. I came up with a liability of $700. He asked what was the difference; I ignored his question and suggested that he compare the two returns. I don't have the time to review tax software for my clients. Maybe I am just a little anxy at the time of the year. I can't even spell. Just five more days dear little preparers.

I love Turbo Tax
Just finished return for a new client who tried to do it on TT first. She was smart enough to realize something was amiss so she decided to seek professional help. I have had 7 people in the last two months bring in audit letters from the IRS on their 2004 returns, which were self-prepared on TT. Did I mention I charge a lot more for audit help than I do for returns? And the TT returns were grossly in error, one lady deducted her mortgage interest 3 times, once on Sch A, again on Form 8829 and then on Sch C. I look forward to more such rep cases this summer, glad the IRS is back in the business of examing returns!

I prepared a Partnership return for a business. One of the partners of the business called me yesterday to tell me her husband uses TT for their personal return. Then she proceeded to ask how she should instruct her husband on entering the K-1 information. My reply was look for partnership input.
I can not believe the assumption by people that we will just give them free advise when we charge others for our knowledge. Not to mention the fact that she wanted software advice on top of it.
Oh well, for every wacko that calls there are 5 other good ones.

TT brings me CLIENTS, too!
Lots of people ask me what I think of TT and I tell them I love it... it brings me new clients every year.
So, how much do you charge people for assistance with the IRS (if you did not do the return)?
I'm a practitioner and not an EA or CPA, but I do help lots of people with the IRS."I am proud to pay taxes in the United States. The only thing is I could be just as proud for half the money." Arthur Godfrey

With numbers running in my head 24/7 for so long a time, I've noticed I really can't spell.
It worried me at first because I was a really good speller. Is it age or the numbers?SueBaby

So true Brian. I go through that with some yo-yo at least twice a week. They see all those outlandish commerical, but fail to understand the concept of what the ad is really saying.
Personally I hate all those 29.99 tax software programs. Why? Because they are misleading. Then we have these shady preparers that use that type software and charge a fee, but don't sign the person(s) return, because they are not authorized preparers.
Just had to get that off my chest!

i HAD A CLIENT THAT CAME OVER TODAY FROM H&R BLOCK AND HAD A INHOME OFFICE DEDUCTION FOR A SCH C. THEY GAVE THEM TWICE THE MORTGAGE INTEREST, ONCE ON 8829 AND THEN RE-ENTERED IT ON SCH A . THEY WERE GETTING A 5000 DOLLAR REFUND. WHEN i DID THE RETURN THE REFUND WAS LESS. CLIENT ASKED " HOW COME THE DIFFERENCE?" mY RESPONSE WAS
THEY GAURANTEE THE BIGGEST REFUND I GUARANTEE THE MOST ACCURATE. SHE LEFT MY OFFICE AND WENT BACK TO BLOCK. AFTER I EXPLAINED THE DIFFERENCE SHE KINDLY TOLD ME THAT SHE THOUGHT BLOCK WAS RIGHT.
HELL DEDUCTING MORTAGE INTEREST AND PROPERTY TAXES TWICE NOW THAT A GREAT IDEA. I WISH I WOULD OF THOUGHT ABOUT THATFIRST. THEN I COULD PROMISE THE BIGGEST REFUND.

Sadly most "tax pros" will disparage any software that takes returns out of their income stream.
Fact is MOST people have NO use for others to do their taxes.
We need to dump the personal income tax and get to something sensible.
