Client had child born on December 12th Haven't received a number yet and wants to file her tax return (EIC). Anybody have any experience on how long it takes? I assume the hospital files the request shortly after birth.

In this area it normally takes a couple of months for a card to arrive for a newborn.

You may want to have the parents contact the local Soc Sec office and they might be able to get "the number" a bit earlier.

It amazes me that they ask us about stuff like this. Hmmm, there's a hospital that made big bucks on the deal, and I'll betcha SSA answers this very question on their site. But no, they ask the tax preparer. "Hey, zeros, can't you look it up for us?" Tell them to make a call to somebody who has some involvement in the issue, do a little surfing, or better yet, just calm down and wait for it to get here. It's February, for Pete's sake.

Have the TP call SSA and explain the problem. Maybe they would be willing to fax the SSN to her if it has been issued.
