I have a client that has one contractor and needs to issue a 1099-misc. Can he pick up a copy at the local IRS office or does he have to buy a package of them from some place like Office Depot? There probably isn't enough time to order one from the IRS by January 31.

I think the easiest route would be to use an online service. I used www.efileforbusiness.com this year. The cost is 3.59 for each form needed I think.

All you need to do by Jan 31 is prepare the 1099-misc for the I/C. That can be done on a black & white form.
Here is the link: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1099msc_12.pdf
You can't print & use the red copy, but you can print the Copy B and Copy 2 and fill them in either by typewriter, by hand, or by some fancy Excel formatting.
You have another month to obtain a red 1099-misc Copy A and a red 1096 for sending to IRS. I'm sure someone on this forum would gladly send you red forms if you wish. PM me and I'll drop a couple of them in the mail to you.Last edited by JohnH; 01-23-2013, 08:59 PM."The only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectful" - John Kenneth Galbraith

John H is always so helpful and stockpiles Forms for 1099 forms - he has assited me graciously a time or two.
I now have learned from him - and am "cataloging" my 1099 forms for stockpile,
So if you need the red copies I also have some years of them and will be more than happy to mail to you, as well
I am trying to transistion from the "archaic" 1099/1096 printing and mailing issues to efile - but it is difficult - given that the resources to do this cost us or we have to pass on to the client - Wish the government would give us more efile tools for this issue on 1099 reporting!
Govt wants the reporting - they should comply with providing the tools

I as well have red copies of 1099s going back several years... probably 2000. If anyone needs some drop me a PM also. I am still letting the clients mail them. Haven't went efile yet. Almost always have some left over.
This did come in handy several years ago with a client getting a 1099 in his SSN instead of EIN. A large corporation's accountant that did the originals said he could not correct it because he did not have any 2006 1099s. I dug some out, handed them to my client, and he forwarded them to him. Took care of a potential mess and my client praised me by saying he never thought "little ole dany" could take care of it. I took it as a compliment.... I guess.

If they would ever get rid of the 1099 red copies and go to what SSA allows for W-2's, we wouldn't have this problem. I always get a stockpile of them every year from the IRS, so I have some old ones. Invariably, some business will come in late in the season with an expense where one should have been done.

I suppose I could get them from IRS for free but they have limits on how many they will send. I order 300 or so of the red 1099 Copy A from Tenenz, and I need about ten of the 1096 forms to go with them. A pack of 25 Form 1096 costs $4.25 so I just add them to the order. I always have a dozen 1096 and 50 or more of 1099-Misc left over at the end of each year and just throw them into a folder for future use if needed. There are probably 8-10 year's worth of red forms in that folder right now - maybe even farther back."The only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectful" - John Kenneth Galbraith

FWIW I can report that I ordered a few 1099s (three different types, INT/DIV/MISC) and 1096s, for my own business, right on the IRS web site and received them in the mail three days later. The screen on the web site took only 3~4 minutes to complete. I ordered the forms on January 15th and received them on January 18th. Assuming that time frame would be the same for everyone, forms 1099/1096 ordered online by January 25th should be received before January 31st. An order submitted on January 28th might even arrive by month end.Roland Slugg

John,
What an excellent idea! I never thought of formatting Excel to print the 1099/1096 forms. Have you done this and do you care to share your worksheet?
