Form 8554 Error

Yes, I'm aware most of you think I operate in a mode of absolute perfection. But to burst your bubble, I will confess that I do make errors and oversights.

Sooooo... I have let my EA status lapse, and I'm rushing to fill out Form 8554 and send them their lousy 30 bucks.

Possible error. There are 8 data squares for my "Enrollment Number." Upon my last renewal, they sent me a 9-digit Enrollment Number.
This consists of a four-digit field (which no doubt indicates the year) and then a five-digit field.

Has anyone else encountered this??

The old enrollment number was in a 9 digit format which included a year number. Last time I renewed, the format was changed to drop the year. So just put in your enrollment number with enough leading zeros to make an 8 digit format. Example: 00012345.

But still only room for 8 digits

For a number of years, my number has had four leading zeroes. So I just dropped one. The online system questioned whether it was right, but ultimately accepted it, so I presume everything is OK.

I have always used a 5 digit number that was on my enrolled agents card. I was on the phone with the IRS one day and she asked my for my enrollment number. I gave her the number I had always used and she said that it wasn't right because it didn't have enough digits. So I got the card out and now there are 3 zeros in front of the numbers I had always used. When I told her that she said okay that is right.
That was new on my card I got when I renewed last year.

My existing card is a formatted in a 4 digit year followed by a 5 digit number. I guess once it gets replaced it'll probably turn into an 8 digit number with three 0's.

To renew online, go to https://www.pay.gov and then in the left of the website where it has "Search Public Forms" enter 8554.

My EA card issued 4/1/11 is my 5-digit EA number plus 3 0's, for a total of 8.

There is no year preceeding the number.

On the bottom of pg 2 of the form, I am guessing you just check the box regaring "under perjury" as my name auto appeared in the box below so I am guessing there is no printing and physically signing the completed form.
