    W-2 on amended return

When you send in an amended return and attach a W-2, do you attach it to the front of the amended return or on the back?

Linda/ This question qualifies you for admission (along with me and jainen) to the "Certified Nit-Pickers" association. As a registered CNP you are now eligible to ask about trivia that boggles the mind and bumfuzzles the normals.

I must admit that you have one-upped me on this point. I had noted that the W-2 should be attached to the (front I think) 1040 on the left side, but I had not wondered about placement on a 1040X. Congratulations on breaking this new ground.

I also advocate the "angling" of the staple (in the top left corner) that holds "my" file copy of the tax return together, in order that the pages will not "flop back" when turned. Do you have an opinion?

    Best regards, BB

      Oh.

Sorry. To answer your question--I don't know.

EDIT: Wait, wait. What I mean is I don't know what the "right" way to do it is. What I
"do" is to attach it to the front (if you're just wondering what others do).

Thank you for admission to CNP. I needed to belong somewhere. Sometimes I do nitpick and other times I just don't care.

1040X returns are not processed like normal 1040 returns. They don’t use the minimum wagers for that job. They get sent directly to people who understand taxes. So to answer your question, it don’t matter. The instructions just say to attach it. The guy (or gal) who opens the envelope will understand what it is and won’t really care how you attached it, as long as you included it in the envelope somewhere with all the other sheets of paper that need to be present.

BTW, did you know Minnesota says at the top DO NOT STAPLE any of the forms together? We all had to go to e-file in MN because none of us professionals could stand the thought of what our clients would do to the return prior to mailing if it wasn’t stapled together.

It really caused an uproar amongst the professionals in this state when they came out with that rule.

            Caif

Calif several years ago sent out instructions that we were to NOT STAPLE W-2's, 1099"s, checks etc to the return. We were to paper clip. After they misplaced or lost so many W-2 forms and checks, most of us in Calif are stapling away. Even the taxpayers request us to staple (that of course is for the t/p's that won't let us efile).

One taxpayer had FTB lose a check for the 2004 filing, her bank had a copy and it was cashed, but FTB couldn't find it.

Staple away, wherever you would like.

Consider yourself excommunicated from the CNP.
