(PTIN renewal) Just got this email from IRS

    IT IS PTIN RENEWAL TIME

It is now preparer tax identification number (PTIN) renewal season. Please renew your PTIN by the end of the year. Before you begin the process, be sure to review the list of information you will need.

That is the abridged edition of the email. The rest days blah blah blah.

Looks official. Links go to irs.gov tax pro page.

    Anyone else get one?

            Official e-mail correspondence

I was told once that the IRS would never send correspondence via e-mail.

Has this changed with respect to the PTIN renewal??

I remember that from a while back when they were having all the hullabaloo about identity theft and IRS was saying they'd never contact you by email. I guess maybe that was restricted to CP2000's and so forth sent to taxpayers (which I think still applies).

Anyway I'm subscribed to that "E-news for tax professionals" and they email me a news update for tax pros once every week, so I suppose all is well -- the IRS notice everybody got (including me) looks official and IRSey.

I think the original registration process was delegated to a 3rd party provider, and I would not be surprised if they are not still doing this. I remember some discussion about emails received at that time which looked like they were from the IRS, but they were just "approved" by the IRS.
