    Business Cards

Considering new cards being printed. Should I use RTRP, after my name ? -OR- Should I have "Registered with the IRS" added -OR- Both ? Appreciate your opinions. Thanks,

Have you checked Circular 230 to see what it says regarding permitted
    terms of advertising?

      Three Choices

I would either put RTRP after your name, or Registered Tax Return Preparer on the line after your name or at the end of your info. It really is a matter of choice.

As Uncle Sam stated, circular 230 has it specifically prescribed....

Circular 230 gives an example ("designated as a registered tax return preparer by the Internal Revenue Service"), and prohibits the word "certified," but doesn't seem to take a stand on RTRP versus "Registered Tax Return Preparer." I wouldn't interpret their wordiness as implying that you must use the entire clause.

I would use the full text somewhere on the card rather than just the initials after your name. How many of your clients know what "RTRP" stands for?

I would just use RTRP, in fact, that is what I am using. Other than CPA, most folks don't know what any of the other designations stand for.
