    NC Wages on W2

Is this W2 wrong or has there been a change I am not aware of in what should be reported as NC Wages?

    Box 1 - 22000

    Box 3 & 5 - 22373

    Box 12 - D 373

    Box 16 - 22373

Shouldn't box 16 show the same as box one? No other state is involved.

Assuming I'm right and assuming the taxpayer wants to bother with this small problem, am I right that the only way forward is to get the employer to correct the W-2?

the w-2 is probably wrong, but since NC piggybacks off the Federal I don't think the errror will affect anything on the return. If so, it wouldn't be more than $25 - probably not worth the time it would take you to correct it.

I was leaning toward advising the client that it was more trouble than its worth to fix it but I had forgotten that box sixteen is seldom or never used by the computer when the State is NC.

I would mention to taxpayer so they can get the employer to fix it going forward.

          Agree

I agree with JohnH....sounds like an error on the W2 which, for all intents and purposes, should have zero effect on the employee's income taxes.

Is the employer by any chance out-of-state? For an employer not familiar with NC guidelines, that might be a possible explanation.

            Response

Yes I will mention it to taxpayer.

Employer has one location and it's in NC, but I have no idea who does their payroll. In my experience a good many people who would never touch an income tax return feel qualified to do payroll and sales tax reporting.
