The last time I saw a discussion like this it was related to a preparer faced with making a "standard" itemized deduction claim, i.e. t/p says "I don't have the specifics, just take the average..."
You know, of course, that the t/p has to have appropriate documentation for whatever is claimed on the return, and as part of your due diligence as a preparer, you should get some reasonable assurance of compliance.
Good clients will respect you for asking questions which act to protect their (and your) situation. You don't need the other kinds of clients...
