I have a client who has contracted me to do his brother's taxes for whom he is guardian and has POA. The brother appears to Not be required to file a Minn return. He has a military pension and SS income. Does this sound right to anyone in Minn? I am in Mich and really not up to speed on most other states. Thank you for any input you may have.

Left out something...
..where does his brother live? In Michigan or Minnesota? where is the pension coming from, Michigan or Minnesota?
Guess your post can be referred to as the "Little Brown Jug" question. -
Sorry
I forgot to say, the brother for whom I am filing does live in a nursing home in Minn.(Wow are those places expensive) As long as I have the floor do you folks in Minn have a form of property tax credit like we have in Mich? If so I could try to file for that. Thanks for the helpComment

State Information
Lawrence, I would suggest that you acquire the States TB to have on hand for the kinds of questions that you are asking. Also you might Google Federation of Tax Administrators and go to the state you are interested in, and get the pertinent information. Another suggestion is to buy tax software that includes all states like TaxSlayer Pro or Drake tax software.Comment

For example for Wisconsin you must know to add a code and subtraction modification for tuition another example would be WI homestead credit, if you don't know to go to schedule H there is nothing that transfers from the Federal. I think I picked up the quote from you "don't let computer software be a substitute for tax knowledge" but it sure is nice to have the software.Comment

My software found it
I did install Minn software and I think I have found what I was looking for. As I said before I rarely do any other states and I thought I would seek advice from someone who does 100's. Thanks for all the help.Comment
