    Can I file a tax return when a dependent does not have a SSN? Sorry for such a stupid question - its been a long season!

    No! You can file than amend when number obtained.

      Or apply for an ITIN

      if dependent doesn't qualify for an SSN.

        You could. If the child was born & died in the same year.
