    Caught up!!

I am finally caught up! I didn't think it was going to happen but it did. I have returns that still need work done on them and they are on extension. I have more people on extensions this year than before...for various reasons. I also have several appointments tomorrow but those are people that I can usually do in one sitting.

I know that many of you don't take appointments this late, but I always have. When you are small, you take them when you can get them. I have a lot of people that come near the end. Some of them used to just do extensions but now they are trying to file before the end of the season. So I guess they are getting better.

But I am relieved that I can actually breathe today.

    W-2 errors

I had to file increased number of extensions this year.
Many of the returns got more complicated than in previous years
requiring close attention and further research for accurate preparation.

I don't know how any of you experienced this.
I found increased number of errors in W-2s brought to me for preparation.
Traditionally, most W-2s were generated by ADP and Paychex sources.
But this year new preparers (mostly nameless) have entered into this field.
And many of them lack proper understanding of local state laws,
especially if the worker is working in the neighboring state.
Ease of preparing W-2 with readily available software also brought
with it unchecked errors in W-2. It is just my observation about W-2.

I would like to know the opinions from other preparers.

      Caught Up - Almost

Yes - I've had to file 3-4 times as many extensions this year due to a number of reasons
      Last minute clients
      Incomplete or inaccurate data
Complexity of the tax return issue
Compliance requirements imposed by IRS and/or state
Late submitted financial information- K-1s, 1099s, brokerage accounts
Misinformation or poor tax advice given to clients by non-tax professionals giving advice.

The problems aren't going to get easier..

Same here. Have more clients (probably some I should not have taken on) because other preparers have dropped out of the business. "Retired" is what the TP's are telling me, but I know why they are retiring. So more extensions due to late receipt of documents, one just got her W-2 on Friday. And the ones I have are more work due to Sche D issues, PTP's, etc. etc.
So I have enough work to last me until end of June.

Definitely have some new clients who have told me their prior preparers are getting out of the business due to the new requirements. Glad to have my beautiful framed RTRP Certificate to let them know I'll be sticking around.

                  I, too, am done.

I am finished with my regulars-got the last two in yesterday. Unless I get more referrals, tax season 2011 is done for me. This was a very rewarding season for my increase in knowledge. I dealt with things this tax year I have never incurred before. I appreciate all of you on this board that shared your positive feed back with me whenever I had an issue.

Most of my usual extensions came in early, which really stressed my workload. I'm looking forward to late Tuesday night!

Finished my 51st extension Friday, and am sure glad I began preparing extensions back in mid-March. Due to a death in the family this past Thursday, I had to be out of town over the weekend so absolutely no work got done.

Because I'd been getting those extensions as they came in after March 10, there's nothing left to do on Mon or Tues but extend any remaining clients who show up (maybe 3 or 4 at most), do a final review of all the extensions which are in, and then maybe circle back and complete a few of those for whom I already filed extensions if I feel like it. But even if I don't touch another return between now and Tues, I'm caught up.

It's a nice feeling and the pressure is off - fantastic way to start the week.

                        Done!

I just finished my last three returns today....only one on an extension. Relief!

Good luck to those of you who will still be working on returns tomorrow and Tuesday!

I got caught up last week. Had a few come in late last week and did their returns because they were "easy". Harder returns are on extensions about 15.

I am in about the same boat as Harlan. Best and easiest tax year I've had. Especially compared to last year.

My choice will be to Olive Garden and have some sangria. Hopefully Tuesday night.

I'll have to call one of my friends and see if we can meet there. But then who will drive us home?

I have a busy day tomorrow. And 2 pick ups for Tuesday. I can always work on some of the extensions. Second thought, maybe not.

Filing the MOST personal extensions I can remember (I hate extensions cause NOW I'll be working on returns into June! cutting into my golf time?) - Had a "broker" on the phone Sat am trying to get him to understand that we need basis for 5 transactions (after he had just faxed us 35 pages of CRAP - monthly statements for may, jun july etc!) GRrrrrr!
Also 88 yr old tp could not understand why we were taking so long on her return - she only had $240K worth of "dividends" hand written on piece of paper - We STILL havent got all the 1099-Divs since her new "broker" took ALL her financial documents (including her 1099-DIVs) and sent to "home office" for "recording"?! GgRrrrrr again!
