I now have 2 clients who married non residents in 2004 who have to file MFS (both are on extension). In both cases, the spouse seems to not want to give me the documentation to get an ITIN. I have heard that a return can be paper filed without the spouses SS # and with non resident hand written in the SS # area. Any feedback from personal experience would be appreciated.

Itin
Why do spouses not want to give you information to get ITIN's? It seems that the only option for them is to file 1040 NR separate returns, but they still need to apply for ITIN's. See IRS publs 519 and 901. Tofile w-7 you need to submit documents they ask for and send theform with the return to the IRS in Philadelphia.
I suspect they may be undocumented and do not want to call attention to themselves. In cases where I have had to prepare w-7's there has been no problem.
