    Sec 179 fence

Section 179 can be taken on farm Fences, right?

    Real Property

Fences are generally considered real property and hence not eligible and this IRS Pub says there is no exception for Farm fences.

      Agriculture fences

This is from the Pub -

      What Property Does Not Qualify?

Land and improvements. Land and land improvements, do not qualify as section 179 property. Land improvements include nonagricultural fences, swimming pools, paved parking areas, wharves, docks, bridges, and fences. However, agricultural fences do qualify as section 179 property. Similarly, field drainage tile also qualifies as section 179 property.

What if this is an ag farm?
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

IRS Pub 225, Farmer's Tax Guide, page 43 show Fences(Agricultural) as 7 year property. I have always taken Section 179 if needed.

For 2011 you also have 100% bonus depr. Depending on your state one might be more favorable then the other. If dealing with ATM you probably rather want to go with bonus.
