    Starting 4868s...question

I just want to be sure about this. My understanding is that you need to have the client sign Form 8878 if there is a balance due with the extension.

If there is no balance due with the 4868 then NO client-signed authorization on Form 8878 is required. Correct?

A form 8878 is not required unless the clients are authorizing a payment WITH the extension. (By the way I never heard of an 8878 until this moment and looked it up.)

But, if the taxpayer will be writing out a check then just generate the extension form and have him send it in.

And yes, if you efile just an extension then you do not need a signature. It can show a balance due - which mine show up that way because all I have is W-2's and no deductions at this point.
