    Child-Adoptee-No Social Security Card Yet

    Child is in the process of being adopted by my client. Will be claiming the exemption for 2011 although the adoption will not be final until 2012. The social card has not arrived yet. Do you recommend filing the return without the adoptee and amend later?

    Extension

    An extension would be my first choice. But, your plan works, too.

      If the child is in his home and the adoption is in the works with no problems that would ultimately negate it then I would extend the return too. What is the holdup on the SSC?
      He can't even file the child as a QR without a social security card.
      Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.
