Tax season.....

WOW most of you sound like you are almost finished. I own two offices and do about 750 returns. Heavily weighted in business taxes, plus owners returns. Also financial planning keeps me busy. by 4/17/06 I might have some 200 extensions. Sometimes I really think it would be better to just do 50 to 100 of my best clients. Then I look at my bank balance and snap out of it. Plus bookkeeping keeps my doors open all year.

When you hire people alot of you say it doesn't work out.
I would like to know why?
I think if you hire right and manage correctly it works great.

question is

what is your secret to hiring? Do you test your prospective employees? If so, what type of test do you use.

I have found that people can interview great, sound like they know what they are talking about. Ask the questions I think should be asked and a few months into the job, I find out they blew a whole lot of steam up my *&^.

I need to hire someone to manage my bookkeeping/payroll business and another person just during the tax season to help prepare personal taxes, I will keep the business taxes.

Any advise you or anyone can provide would not fall on deaf ears. I am 0-2 with employee hires and I really don't want to strike out on the next hire.

Been paying $2,203.00 the last three years, plus you pay $2 for Fed and $2 for State to do E-file. I going to look at Drake this year, there price is $995.00 and that includes E-file.
They’re sending me a copy of the 2005 program to try out.

I use Drake. I am looking to switch after this tax season. I am still getting updates over the internet. Every day. Found a program error yesterday. It didn't carry the gross profit % from prior years 6252 forward correctly. I caught the problem in reviewing a return I did. Just unhappy with all the problems this year.

well-paid colleague, it's certainly refreshing to see that somebody around this joint is hittin' the big time. You and I have at least one thing in common--I look at my bank balance and snap out of it (that dream world I've been livin' in the past 3 months) and realize that it's...a...very...very...long... time... 'til January again. As for extensions, I've got a solid twenty or so.

About the employee situation--what can we say about them? Hmm, puts me in mind of that Supreme Court justice who made the famous remark about porn, to wit, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it." Well, I feel the same about a good employee.

Tell you what. Forward your address to me and I'll forward my niece to you. Don't worry about a thing--she'll bring her own stool and she's just fine as long as office hours don't conflict with "Jerry Springer" and "Oprah."

P. S. Do you have anything against Marlboro 100 Lights or the hygienically-challenged?

year of growth

This has been a year of growth for me. Increased my business AND my prices. I did a 10% increase across the board. Don't think I lost anything and gained more respect! Weed out the bottom-feeders, I learned at the IRS Forums.
This message board helped me IMMENSELY this year. I feel like I'm part of a professional office, and not alone.
I work alone in my home and went from 160 to 200 clients this year. Many new tax situations for me this year requiring more research, as you have seen on the board from my questions. I think SueBaby said the same thing.
What a wonderful resource this has been for pubs and knowledge.
My new goal is 400 clients!

I fully agree with you about the TMI Message Board, though. It's just absolutely great. I've spouted off so much stuff l learned here that I secretly feel guilty for being the biggest copy-cat in the world. I can almost see the gears clicking in the heads of impressed customers who are obviously thinking, "Wow--this guy certainly knows his stuff." I feel like that, by rights, I should be paying commissions to Bees and Armando.

Cold, Sore Throat??????? Stop by the drug store, or Walmart and get Airborne. It's like a Alka Seltzer tablet. Just put it in water, let it fizz for 2 minutes to a lemon drink, then drink; withing 10 minutes you feel stronger. Can take when sick

Not so. The lablel says take it before you get sick as a CYA, so it's not regulated as medicine. My Doc said it's great, even when your sick.
