do you guys take the full credit when box 7(checked if the amount in box 1 or 2 includes amounts for an academic periiod beginning january-march2012) is checked? i have a guy who has the 1098-t with box 7 check and in his case all the amount is for 2012. box 8 is not checked which is (check if at least half time student), but this guy is taking 9 credit hours. so, i don't know if he qualifies or not.
also, how does IRS check for these? it seems like these 1098-t forms leave lots of stuff for the taxpayer to decide.

For the $, use the transcript from the burser's office. But, if student wasn't at least half-time, you have fewer choices of credits &/or deductions.

Simple answer

There are many discussions on these boards re Form 1098-T. Strongly suggest you review them for answers to your questions.

If the "2012" expenses were PAID prior to 12/31/2011, then consider them for the current tax returns.

If they were not paid, continue to ignore Form 1098-T and work with the "real" facts as explained by Lion. The full/half/part time student question stands separately.
