wondering if a federal accepted return thru mef can later on be rejected because I noticed that the ssn is wrong by a number and it was not rejected.

I think what it says is that there is someone with that SSN and at least the first 4 letters of the last name matches. Your client should probably expect to hear from the IRS at some point to clarify the issue. On the other hand, that other person is almost certain to hear from the IRS IF they are in fact a taxpayer and do send in a tax return. They will have to send in a paper return and at some time the IRS will want to match w2s etc.

If you use the Self-Select PIN (which requires the previous year's AGI or PIN and DOB, then I would have expected a reject.
[Remember that this is Tax Jargon, not English. Self-Select PIN does not mean that the taxpayer selected the PIN himself.]
