Sister lived with bro and wife all year. She rec'd approx $8000 soc sec, and $3300 maintenance(under the gross amount). Bro says she did not pay rent, food, utilities, nothing towards the home where she was living. He's not sure where she spent her money, can he claim her as a dependent?

Support is the issue
Ddi the couple provide over $11,300 support for the sister. You get to count the fair rental value of the home plus whatever they spent on her. -
I think you also need to try to complete the Dependent's Worksheet - should provide you with the answer

My guess is that they could not. Just because sis lived there and probably ate their food is a long way from providing over half of her support. Remember total household expenses are divided by the number of folks in the household to arrive at her share of.Comment
