    IRS and State Acceptance

Re Federal - I find that I get an ack from my software company that just means they got what I sent them. I'm used to that. Then as soon as ten min later I get an IRS MEF Ack and sometime the next day I get an IRS Legacy Ack. Then I did my first efiled state return of the year this afternoon and I have not gotten any word but I wasn't expecting to.

At what point can I know that the Federal Return will not be rejected? IOW is IRS MEF Acceptance the final acceptance? I know that is not the final word that the refund if any will come through in normal time much less the final word that there won't be an IRS notice in response to the return. Still I'm used to thinking of acceptance as a milestone that means in essence that there's nothing further I or the taxpayer can do until we hear from the government or don't get the expected refund on the expected schedule/

As far as I know, MeF acknowledgement is the same as the old legacy acceptance. If you're getting some legacy acceptance, it could mean that that return had to be flipped to legacy - either because your vendor doesn't support some form in MeF or because the IRS took too long to respond to the MeF transmission. If you got both IRS MeF and IRS legacy acks on the same return, you should contact your vendor for an explanation.

For that matter, you should contact your vendor regardless, as there's no way I can guarantee that what you're calling an IRS MeF Ack is really what I think it is, as opposed to something else from your vendor.

Finally, different states have different policies concerning their acknowledgements and MeF.

        Acknowledgements

I have just filed in a few returns the last few days - what I didn't use last year was the MeF, but have toggled to have all returns to file if qualified (in my software)

So far IRS - MeF goes through fine on the ones I have filed - less than 10 minutes - nothing from the old Legacy----- processes very fast, State returns are now a little slower so far, but I am receiving within 30 minutes of the Federal MeF. If you are looking for NC State - it in the past has always taken DAYS for an Acknowledgement.

I would think you would have to check and validate with your Software Provider to answer your particular questions on the EF acceptance and confirmation Federal and State.

        Good Luck

            strange answer

The representative said that what's probably happening is that Drake is new to MEF and my state returns do not meet the criteria to go MEF so they are having to go legacy which means in turn that my Federal has to go legacy as well as MEF.

I use Drake and all the federal ACKs have been MeF in 5-10 minutes of uploading the return. I did notice the state (Oregon) is not being piggybacked to the fed as in previous years but is going direct to the state. State ACK is coming back within a day, same as before.

Weird. My software will MeF the federal and legacy the state without a problem. I get an ACK for the federal within a minute or so of submitting, but the state ACK comes back a day or two later.

Same with mine, however I don't believe all states allow the stand alone, meaning you must piggyback with the Federal.

                    erchess,

Do the legacy ack's show a little a instead of the normal upper case A? And do you notice that it say's next to the a - NC-SO?

What this is is that the state has been accepted in legacy format. The NC-SO means that the return was for NC.

The Federal MeF is the only federal acceptance you should see.
