IRS reject - Efile database error

    Is anyone having this problem?
I have 3 tax returns which have rejected due to an efile database error stating the dependent name and ss# do not match the IRS database. line 6c(2)

I have the social security cards, they are NOT forged. I have verified DOB and everything else I can think of. I have called the IRS efile help desk and they say it is not their fault it must be the social security office. I have not had another other rejects on any of the 75 other returns I have done this tax season. I cant reach any one with the social security office and am sure unless the taxpayer is here at the time I finally do get thru they wont discuss anything with me.My software company has verified it is not a software issue either. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Did you try variations on which name on the SS card is the last name? Some ethnic name structures get messed up by SSA when entered into the system. The paternal last name gets listed as a middle name, the maternal last name is made the only last name in the system. If that's not the case, it sounds like you'll have to paper file.

Since you have the SS cards, only thing coming to mind is, are the last names on the cards the same as you are filing? That is, in the case of a card with more than two names (first & last) have you picked the correct name to be the last name? I have had this situation before.

e.g. - Ann Smith Jones- Could be Smith or Jones in SS records.

About 13 years ago I had a client whose daughter kept getting rejected. Thru trial and error, I found that the computer at SS or IRS had dropped the "A" in her last name. Her SS card was printed with the correct name. We have used the name without the "A" and it has worked every year since. I also had a client whose card showd 2 "B"'s in BBROWN. She liked the error as she could tell official mail easier, although she used only 1 B most of the time.

          Further

Have the individuals married/unmarried/remarried ?? Even "hyphenated" names can create a match-up problem.

If the names are "foreign" then that could be a contributing factor.

Do you have access to a prior year (successfully filed) tax return?

But strange things can happen: Client came in and had decided to use TTax. Everything she did got rejected for SSN issues. To make a long story short: It turns out her date of birth in the SS records was wrong, and had been her entire life, but since TTax asked (used?) her DOB as a cross check, her return automatically bounced.

          Good luck!!

Have the taxpayer go down to the local office with their SS cards and they can have this straightened out in no time. When I say "in no time" I mean AFTER they get to talk to someone. There's usually a wait to actually get a person. I never deal with SSA by phone.
