i mailed in the form w12 almost four weeks ago after not being to log in the online system because i could not answer the security question. I still can not believe they will not reset your password, i mean come on IRS. i was wondering would anybody know if i have any options as to get this faster or start doing return before i get the renewal. also, what if i get a ptin for somebody in my office and have him to the return till mine comes and if so do they give you the ptin immediately if it is done online?

PTIN renewal
taxea wrote
You could call them
I wouldn't waste my time with such a call at this time of year.
Did the IRS cash your check?
You did send a check with Form W-12, right?
If you have a cancelled check, then you have proof that you filed the application.
Just file the returns. The IRS knows they're way behind. You're acting in good faith.

On a somewhat different note, I received this information from the IRS today.
If they have not received your renewal, they started sending notices out last week. Here is what I was told by the IRS:We are in the process of issuing PTIN expiration notices to those individuals who had 2011 PTINs but have not renewed them for 2012. The notices began last week and will be issued on a staggered schedule through Jan. 30. For individuals with online accounts, the notices are delivered to their secure mailbox and an email is sent advising the recipient to check their mailbox. For people without an online account, the notices are sent by regular mail.
As stated in the letter, beginning Feb. 21 anyone with an expired PTIN is removed from the list of valid PTIN holders until they renew. Any returns they file will be processed, but they can expect a contact if they continue filing returns without renewing.
We are still processing renewals and will continue to do so after Feb. 21Doug

Koss you are right...I called today and the person that answered only explained how to do it on line....I went on line and it wouldn't bring up the page where one would pay for the renewal. Now I am looking for the fax number..I think it is on the form.Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

irs letter
yes i did send a check with the application but it has not been cashed yet. The irs sent out letters about the ptin renewal and here is a part of it:
The notice states that if a preparer is planning to prepare tax returns in 2012, the preparer must renew the PTIN. Preparers who do not renew their PTINs by February 21, 2012, will be removed from the list of individuals with valid PTINs for 2012 until they renew it. The Return Preparer Office also advised that any returns filed by those with expired PTINs will be processed, but those preparers can expect to be contacted by the IRS if they continue filing returns without renewing.
so, since i have tried to log in god knows how many times with no luck and having sent my w12, am I going to be able to use the good faith arguement and file returns? how many returns before IRS actually contacts the tax preparer?
