Milking the System: A Modest Proposal

I decided to start a new thread in response to Lucy's rant on a couple that apparently got divorced in order to have the benefits of one person who is HoH and another who is single, EIC, etc., etc. I don't have a strong opinion on this particular client. Lucy wanted to know how to report the "fraud" to the IRS. But someone else commented that technically the returns might actually be correct. I agree. Also: Lucy collected a fee. She never actually did their returns, but she collected a fee, and doesn't plan to refund it. That's okay; I'm not passing judgment on that. She may have done some work for them, and she deserves to get paid, even if they never use the work product. But now you have a client relationship, and releasing information to the IRS without the client's permission could actually be a violation of Circular 230 regs.

    That said...

One tax pro I know has suggested for years that the solution to all fraud, corruption, abuse and duplication of government benefits such as food stamps, EIC, housing subsidies, medicaid, and so forth is this:

Offer a program where any adult can enroll in a government support program where they are never expected to work or engage in any productive, gainful activity, even if they are clearly capable of doing so. By enrolling in the program, they are guaranteed government benefits that will provide them with a middle class standard of living for their entire lives. You simply never have to work at all, even if you can, and the government supports you with a decent standard of living. You suck on the government teat your entire life and then you die. Here's your $35K per year in benefits, adjusted each year for inflation. Go enjoy your life, courtesy of the government, paid for by the taxation of those who actually do work and support themselves.

Under this proposed program, there are only two conditions for enrollment, and there are no waivers or exceptions available.

To qualify for this program, you have to enroll before age 21, and you have to be sterilized.

Eugenics? Social engineering? Warped application of Darwin's theory? Maybe.

But it happens in other ecosystems. Thinning the herd, weeding out, whatever you want to call it.

It would probably work. But any legislator with the guts to even talk about it might as well kiss his or her career goodbye.

    Crippled Crow Syndrome

Burton, spoken like a true Republican. The same rugged individualism that Teddy Roosevelt fought during his entire political career.

Societal behavior should thus be like a flock of birds--if a crow breaks a limb or has
difficulty flying the other crows gather 'round and kill it.

The wealthy obtain their wealth from the working class. I remember living in a small town when their major plant shut down, and hundreds of people could no longer pay their rent. Landlords all over town were complaining. Tenants were evicted, and when the landlords could no longer rent their dwellings for the same price as before, their wail was heard all over the county.

Micro-economics says "look at what I'm paying out for these sorry citizens." Irrespective of political party (but leaning Democrat), the Macro-economist says "A rising tide raises all ships."

For all rugged individualists ("I've worked for it, it's mine, and I shouldn't have to share it"), I cordially invite them to conditions in Mexico, where the estates of only 34 families own over 50% of the land.

I know some people who took off two weeks of work to go volunteer to help in the rebuilding effort going on down in the Hurricane disaster areas. They were assigned to a crew that re-did the roofs of about 20 homes damaged in the storms. They provided their labor for free. Contractors in the area tried to “hire” these guys to come work for them. Insurance companies were paying about $3,000 to homeowners for their damaged roofs. The contractors were jacking up the price to about $10,000 because that is what wealthier customers could pay. They could not understand why these guys were doing it for free.

Needles to say, people in the area are having a hard time finding someone to repair their homes because construction contractors are taking advantage of the situation. At the same time, thousands of volunteers for various charitable organizations are doing the work for free.

      Isn’t that ironic?

        Next years taxes

I've heard some of our locals bragging they are getting $150+ an hour to hang drywall. Next year when they receive that 1099MISC and have to pay the self employment tax they'll be the ones that are complaining how the Gov is "ripping" them off. Then I can ask how do you think those homeowners felt!?!

We already have that government system called wellfare, medicaid, food stamps, EIC, and probably a hundred other programs taxpayers don't even know about. The only think missing is the sterilized program.

I have a better suggestion. They should move to France.

Isn't that the basis of the free market economy that we're supposed to have? Law of supply and demand? When demand goes up, and supply stays the same (or drops) then prices go up?
