23 tax breaks
Jennings lists 23 breaks of one kind or another and just a cursory review tells me these are all related to the much-politicized "Bush tax cuts." These are 10 years old now and should no longer be such a political issue, except for the fact that congress will not act on them one way or another and they keep getting resurrected late in the year as temporary legislation. They keep kicking the can down the street. Jennings warns that we should be aware of what will happen when our clients find out just what these expiring factors do to their tax bill.
To carry this line of thinking further, we might be well-advised to develop a similar list for the specific impacts of Obamacare. One of the big hopes of Republicans who swept their candidates into office in 2010 was the spectre of repealing the HealthCare bill. This obviously is not going to happen, and the timing of the bill is seemingly strategically timed such that the real misery will not happen until AFTER the 2012 election.
If we publicized such a list and tried to mass educate the public, there might be pressure to get something done about it. Educating the public is possible but becomes difficult when you get out of 20-second soundbytes and move into complicated topics that are more lengthy in explanation.Last edited by Snaggletooth; 11-10-2011, 02:03 PM.

In other words, a democratic government is the only one in which those who vote for a tax can escape the obligation to pay it.
