What Mfg and specs did you install?
We don't have natural gas, so the generator is gasoline, which means it's portable - in the pickup truck sense - not permanently installed.

It's a Generac SVP-5000, but as I said, it's not enough - we get noticeable brownouts when the well pump or refrigerator kick in. You should probably sit down and figure your own wattage needs, taking into account both the operating and the peak (starting) loads. Also go for a battery start. Figure $1000 - $1500 for the generator, and a few hundred more for the electrician, switcher panel, external 30 amp/240V outlet and the specialty cable. Don't even consider running your own cables or cords.

A gas or LP generator would likely cost a few thousand more, probably twice as possible, require much less maintenance, and would be much easier to start. They'd also require a big permanent box somewhere outside the house.

Of course, I don't like it when real estate agents and home repair people give tax advice, so perhaps you should ask about generators in a more appropriate forum. In particular, I'm sure there's more and better experience concerning the handful of brands.

      Info helpful

You are okay Gary sharing info , we had done some research, and here we would be Gas - Generac was on our list - and yes more costly than what you have now.

Of course you never miss what you don't have until you don't have it - So I am thinking about going on the Generator Campaign again with my husband.

      Thanks,

      Sandy

        Generac

Generac has come up high in satisfaction as I've asked around our area. We'll have to have a couple of huge propane tanks. People who installed several years ago spent $6,000+ here in pricey Fairfield County. (Some spent $10-15,000 but even run outside lights.)
