That segment was part of the NC-NATP annual state conference in Wilmington last year. This year's conference is in Cherokee in October. I may not make that one. Still trying to decide.

Well, that IS interesting. Do you suppose they accessed the IRS transcript which is sent to the states to get that? (PS. That seminar was in Wilmington last year, did you go?)

    Thanks, I'll try that.

We may have fairly high taxes here, but the technology is better! And the weather too, BTW. Yinz are getting the 100+ we usually have this time of year (and haven't had for the last two either!). We don't have the humidity, but I've seen days where it was 115. High tomorrow? 88.

Very interesting question. And I asked the NCDOR rep exactly that last year when she gave a presentation at a seminar I attended. They can't. She very quickly stated of course, that falsification of W-2 information would be illegal. Well, yeah...... It seems most of our states are nowhere near the proficiency of the IRS in that matter.

If NCDOR doesn't have it, how do they catch cases where people claim more than was actually withheld (whether inadvertently or deliberately)?

As far as I know, NCDOR will not have it. His only remedy is to get it from the employer.

Ugh, I was afraid of that. No, this guy has lost all of his W-2s for the last few years (he had some back issues he had to clear up in NC to get back a license & so has been working there on & off when not in TX or CA...its a long story). Anyways, the W-2s got lost somewhere along the line & I'm filing 2008-2010 for him.

so yeah, the issue is how much NC withholding he had. Maybe I can get it from the practitioner's line, or maybe it becomes zero able to be claimed. At least he's starting before October to get this stuff done!

Not only do they not "track" it, they don't match it either with what the employer sends them (when the TP files.) I was appalled to find out they destroy the W-2's after coordinating with the quarterly payroll reports if the totals agree.

I believe what Joan's post is referring to is whether or not the taxpayer or the taxpayer's representative can access online at NCDOR the history of NC tax withholding, NC ES payments for a particular year for the taxpayer.

California and several other states have implemented this to make it easier to verify ES payments and tax withholding or other payments on a taxpayer's account by tax year. with the appropriate sign on information - similar to e-services with Fed.

Joan, so far I have not found this feature available on NC DOR - here is Tax Practtioner Priority Service 919-754-2500

and link to the NC POA form http://www.dornc.com/downloads/powerofattorney.html
    Hope this assists you,

    Sandy

I also misunderstood. Here's a link to the forms section of the NCDOR web site.
The withholding booklet is the NC-30

I may have prior years tables on my computer at the office.
    I can check on Monday.

    Missed the Point

Erchess my friend, I think you missed the point.

Joan is in a position to need the withholding tables for a certain year. For purposes of discussion, let's just assume the year is 2008. She may be preparing W-2 for a defined amount which changes as she has to "gross up" his pay. (for one example).

To say that there are no withholding tables is equivalent to saying there are no tax tables for amended returns.

If a W-2 is prepared for NC wages, with NC withholding, and the proper payroll tax returns are filed and payments made for the year in question, NC should most likely honor it even if for a prior year. This does not mean they won't jump on it and penalize him, but that should be expected from the beginning of her engagement.

    Tracking State Withholding

Your post was the first evidence I have seen that anyone tracks State Income Tax Withholding other of course than the withholding employer. The IRS does not track it. North Carolina certainly does not track it and will not give credit for withholding beyond what if any is on the Forms W2 submitted.
