    New TurboTax software surprise ??

For years I've been using, as a second source when needed, TT Premier software.

Today I wanted to review a 2010 file stored there. There was a recent (06/29/11) update indicated for the 2010 version, so I allowed it to install.

BUT afterward the software would not run, generating an error code of 17189294382.

I did some Googling around, and discovered this is apparently a very common (and recent!) problem. Have any of you encountered such? (Have you even loaded TT recently...? )

FWIW: I received a similar error message for the 2009 TT version. (The software for years 2008 and 2007 currently operate OK.)

    Suggestions????

NOTE: This is *NOT* the TT Professional version.....so I have no knowledge if a similar mess might exist there.

Being that Turbo Tax is NOT for professionals.. your not going to get much help here. Does your primary software not handle everything in Turbo Tax Premier??

Also, you might want to read over the Terms of Agreement... I bet it says you CANT (LOL) use the software as a paid preparer.... It does.. be careful using TT as a tax professional.

You are not licensed or permitted to use the Software, or allow the Software to be used, to prepare tax returns, schedules or worksheets on a professional or commercial basis (i.e., for a preparer's or other fee). Additionally, you must indemnify and defend Intuit against any claims or lawsuits, including (without limitation) attorneys’ fees, that arise from or result from the use of the Software on a professional or commercial basis.

Thank you very much for reminding me of the Intuit Terms of Agreement.

#1 - I have been using TTax for way-too-many years for my personal returns. That is my choice. I keep a lot of stuff "rattling around" in there which would set off all kinds of alarm bells of the "final check" type for a currently efiled return. Old W2 info, old Sch B stuff, some Sch C/E (inactive/depreciation) stuff, and etc.

#2 - In no way do I use it to "prepare" returns. Certainly I can use it as a source of additional information, just as I use other sources of available information for the more complicated returns whenever I hit a bump along the road. [ Aside: So have you never photocopied/"used" any worksheets or copyrighted material along the way??? ] I definitely put it into the "user friendly" with a high level of accuracy category. Some commercial/professional software arguably lacks that approach, much like going to an otherwise excellent doctor whose bedside manner and/or explanations oft leave a bit to be desired.

#3 - I stumbled onto this problem when trying to review my family returns for some upcoming 2010 estimated tax payment issues and end-of-year scenarios.

#4 - Please reread the final line of my OP. Although I don't know it for a fact, my supposition is that the underlying personal version is not that greatly different from the professional version, separate from the "client" / efiling / billing / "once in a blue moon" forms / and similar aspects. Some years ago I did review the TT Pro Series, hence my observation there. At the time their "one size fits all" pricing structure prohibited me from any serious consideration of the professional product for my own Sch C tax business. With deference to Intuit, it is my understanding they now offer different preparer fee options.

Their version for professionals is VERY different.. Proseries is the name, not TT anything.

No biggy.. Ive seen your name post quite a bit.. I was pretty sure your doing return legit.. just saying.. your not gonna get much if any help with any TT product, as NONE of them are for pros... that were proseries by Intuit comes in.

I'm running Win XP. You ??

Like you, I also ran the newest 06/29 update without any problems. But nothing since has worked (2010 or 2009 versions).

My best guess, especially since many other people are apparently experiencing the same problem, is there is either a problem with current Microsoft.Net framework (should be updated 3.5 SP1) or possibly some interference with firewall/antivirus stuff.

If you recall, TT several years ago had to (begrudgingly) admit their software had what amounted to legalized spyware running within the program. Much omelet on their corporate face....

For more, Google the error code I provided and you can see for yourself what people are saying about the problem.
