    WalMart.com

This is an offshoot to the Amazon post, but starting a separate thread so the subject matter won't be obscured.

I've never bought anything from WalMart.com. However, I've heard that they don't charge sales tax either.

Is this true? If so, how on earth can they claim they don't have a physical presence in all states?? Of course, they can start a separate corporation, but that would be a whole lot easier for states to win than the flimsy excuses they are using to prove nexus in New York and other states. The corporate veil has been penetrated for much less than this.

    Tell me I'm mistaken....

I've purchased from Walmart online. I did pay sales tax. I buy from Walgreens online too. They ask for my zip code. Then on the next screen they ask if I'm in the city or county. Then the sales tax is calculated and added at the checkout screen.

The sales tax law that has been in effect for years is that if a business has a physical location in the state they must collect sales tax even if the location is only a distribution warehouse. Amazon does not collect sales tax in states that it does not have a distribution warehouse and this is why it drops the affiliates that do business and have a physical presence in the states that are passing on line sales tax laws.

Walmart.com collects sales tax in states that it has a physical warehouse or store. This is why people who live in states that have a physical walmart business have to pay sales tax to them.
