    PTIN renewals now calendar year

I am impressed the IRS didnt wait a couple years down the road before changing this. This came in an email to me from the IRS.

    Dear Tax Preparer,
The Return Preparer Office is changing the renewal cycle for all PTINs to a calendar year renewal. Even though you got your PTIN before the end of 2010, it will not expire until December 31, 2011. Open season for 2012 PTIN renewal will begin in October 2011. You will receive another message then reminding you to renew your PTIN before year end.

Good news for those of us who obtained our PTIN's as early as Sept 2010.

I sure hope that they got their computer system and e-mail service working.

Also, I hope they ask for our PTIN during the renewal.
    Jiggers, EA

      One more Item

Yes, just one more item to track, - My file for IRS sign ons, and passwords and applications is growing - Now I have e-services, PTIN, EA renewal - seems like there should be another something or other in there as well.

Other than Revenue Raising - as small as fee or whatever the fee - why do we have to renew our PTIN each year?? The original plan was maybe every 3 years and why can't we as EA, CPA, renew with our licensing cycle.

Hopefully they will have the system more "perfected" for the renewal and readily take our $$ than the original sign up that we all just went through. AND have our PTIN already on the application when we do so!

I dont think EA and CPA are going to have to renew every year. I believe this is for the RTP program. I just renewed my EA for 3 years at a reduced rate because I had renewed the PTIN previously.
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

I believe the PTIN is every year (no matter the licensing Status) the EA license renewal remains at a 3 year renewal, based on the latest information.

Sandy...I'm not sure but it makes sense because they did lower the EA rate.

              PTIN renewal

PTINs are something seperate from EA. All preparers are required to obtain a PTIN and renew it each year. Once the tests are available, there is a continuing education requirement. The cost of the PTIN is $64.25 (I think).
EA is for those preparers who wish to represent taxpayers before the IRS. There are three sections to the test and the fee for the EA certificate and renewal is $30. The continuing education requirement is different from that to obtain and renew the PTIN. As they have a higher CPE requirement, EAs are not required to take the PTIN test. The EA renewal remains at a 3 year time frame.
