Every software package I have used has made me enter the RTN and DAN twice each and the second time being without view of the first so that both had to be done from the check. If your software doesn't at least offer you a set up option to make you do this every time, I'd get new software.
Not all software is set up for this. I wish the one we use at the CPA office I work for did. It is one of the largest and most expensive softwares out there and this is one of my biggest gripes with them. I would like to have blind reentry for account numbers and SS numbers at least, If it does have a set up for that I have never found it.
I do use one at home that has the option and I agree that most of the programs I have used over the years offers blind reentry.

Maybe this will help you SFBob.
I found out that you can call 888-353-4537 which is automated clearing house number to make changes to bank account information. The changes must be made at least 2 days before the scheduled date.

I did this to stop a payment from being taken out of an account that had been scheduled,
So I am not sure if it would work with the direct deposit information but it would be worth trying.

Let us know if it works.

Linda this is the number for automatic withdrawl of tax liability payments from bank account. It is not for direct deposit changes.
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

Had a similar situation this year. In spite of all my verbal admonishments as to correct bank numbers (including a written notice with every tax return on bright, colored paper) a long-time client closed a checking acct due to identity theft and failed to give me the new information. Old acct number had not been reissued to anyone, (a year later) and it rejected, went to check-writing at the IRS and state, and checks came in the mail. No problem. In the one case I had previously years ago where the acct number used WAS a valid number, it happened to belong to another of my clients. I and the client who actually got the refund went to the bank together, cashier's check was drawn (no charges) made payable to correct payee, and delivered personally by me. Your clients should receive a paper check without further adieu.

              Thanks Burke

I have not received the 8821 from my client as yet. I will post the results when I contact the IRS and California. California will discuss without the 8821, however I will wait until it is in hand. Thanks for your comments. Seems we cannot be to careful. This was my first in 23 years. Well I guess thats how life goes.
