If you sign up for the IRS TAXNEWS you will get the same information without having to pay for membership to NAEA.

I chose NATP they don't require that you pay to be a member of the local chapter and I don't think NAEA has done anything signifigant to get the word on on what EA's are all about.

I don't want any slipups in this matter. I am not good when put on the spot for testing. Don't ever want to go through that again.

God Forbid that I would have to take the EA exam again to requalify or be subject to some of the new qualifications!

Finally e@alert on the EA Renewal for those of us that have renewal period. SSN's ending in 4,5,6

Our long wait is over. Final regulations on the EA/ERPA user fees are arrived!
The final regs should be published in the Federal Register on April 19th. Please remember, however, that the renewal window for EAs currently in cycle (i.e., those with social security numbers ending in 4, 5, or 6) will not commence until 30 days after publication in the Internal Revenue Bulletin (not the Federal Register), which should be May 2nd.
Therefore, the renewal period will commence on June 1st and conclude on August 30th. IRS expects to process the applications and issue enrollment cards within 90 days of the end of the renewal period (by November 28th). The renewal will be retroactive to April 1, 2011 for EAs who fall under the provisions of Announcement 2010-81 (and who properly renew their enrollment prior to the end of the adjusted renewal period). This information is all available in Announcement 2011-29.
Conversations with OPR lead us to believe that EAs (and ERPAs) in cycle should expect a letter from OPR. We should also see new information on the OPR portion of IRS' website, so you may want to be on the lookout for that. While the new Form 8554 should not be available until June 1st, the revised Form 23 (application to become an enrolled agent) may be available within the next week or so.
As we've shared previously, those of you in cycle will continue to be considered an enrolled agent in good standing even though your card indicates a March 31, 2011 expiration date.

IRS Releases Final Regulations Reducing EA Fees

The IRS has finalized the regulations lowering the enrolled agent registration and renewal fees to $30. The reduction of the fee applies to enrolled agents and enrolled retirement plan agents. The regulations will go into effect on April 19, 2011.

As of this morning, the IRS has not posted revised Form 23, Application for Enrollment to Practice Before the Internal Revenue Service or Form 8554, Application for Renewal of Enrollment to Practice Before the Internal Revenue Service to its website. Presumably that will take place soon. Meanwhile, enrolled agents with social security numbers ending in 4, 5 or 6 remain enrolled in good standing until the IRS publishes a revised renewal period. When a date for the renewal period is determined, the IRS will publish a schedule for affected enrolled agents to renew their enrollment in the Internal Revenue Bulletin and on the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) webpage. This schedule will be published at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the revised period for enrollment. Affected enrolled agents will have at least 60 calendar days but no more than 120 calendar days under the revised renewal of enrollment schedule to submit the required applications for renewal.

Yeah, we all heard that but those in the renewal cycle have been waiting for word on the date they can finally renew, when the IRS will open for renewals again. It's a specific number of days after "publication," so the date of the IRS announcement is important.

The IRS says it will be lowered to 30 or 60 dollars to accomodate the PTIN fee. That came out about a month ago

At last, maybe those of us that need to can finally complete our renewal registrations. Guess I am glad they waited until after the tax filing season.
